Layers: A Tranquil Oasis Amidst Urban Chaos

MII-DESIGN's Award-Winning Residential Project in Taipei

Layers is a unique residential design project that stands out for its use of different shades of grey and the strategic stacking of materials to create a serene atmosphere. The designers were inspired by the desire to provide a relaxing space for residents amidst the city's hustle and bustle. The design's unique properties lie in its ability to create a tranquil atmosphere through the careful layering of materials and colors.

The realization of the design required meticulous planning and precision. The construction layout was crucial due to the fixed size specifications and construction methods of the materials used. For instance, the stacking of wall tiles and the width of the caulking had to be accurately calculated. Similarly, the dividing lines of the flooring needed to be precisely laid out in advance to present an elegant arc.

The design team, comprising of Tai Po Yu, Chuang Chih Chieh, Hun Tsai, and Huang Zi Ying, aimed to create a feeling of flowing spaces. They used different colors of flooring to define different spaces, subtly connecting them. The design also aimed to enrich the small space by using different layers of material and processing delicate lines. The use of heavy material and color created a contrasting light and floating feeling, while the curved lines in a square space added a sense of flow.

The construction of Layers took three months, during which the original structure of the space was preserved, and only the surface materials were changed. This approach allowed the team to achieve a new spatial experience within a limited budget. The design was a challenge due to the specific size specifications and construction methods of the materials. However, the team successfully overcame these hurdles to create an elegant and tranquil space.

In conclusion, Layers by MII-DESIGN is a testament to the team's belief in the aesthetics of life being built upon layers of experiences. The design, which has won the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, is a perfect blend of modern design elements and a calming, low-profile ambiance.
